On 8 and 9 July 2024, ENAC and its partners carried out real-time simulations as part of the EUREKA SESAR3 Fast Track project. The aim of these simulations was to test emergency and disruption management for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) at vertiports.
Five scenarios were explored, each highlighting different conditions for using airspace. These scenarios included a number of key players:
- Air traffic controllers
- Air taxi drivers
- Aircraft and UAV pilots
- Vertiport operators
- U-space service providers
4 major challenges were addressed:
- Raising awareness of the situation: Improving understanding of and responsiveness to emergency situations.
- Coordination: Ensure smooth and efficient communication between all the players involved.
- Definition of roles: Clarify the responsibilities of each player to ensure optimum management.
- Landing procedures: Implement safe and effective protocols for landings in a variety of conditions.
Results and outlook
- The results of these simulations highlighted several areas for improvement:
- Visualisation: The need for more effective visualisation tools to provide a better understanding of the airspace.
- Data exchange: Optimisation of data flows between the various players.
- Dynamic airspace management: real-time adaptation to changing airspace conditions.
