Air Traffic Controllers' Digital Assistant (ATC-DA) for Conflict Resolution
Advancing AI Support for ATCOs Following the dry run session in real conditions held beginning of the month, ENAC and Airbus Defense and Space conducted the first real time validation session from March 24th to 28th as part of the JARVIS project. This session builds upon the dry run by further assessing AI’s potential in conflict resolution and its integration into ATCO operating methods.
Simulation Environment
The experiment takes place in a dedicated test room at ENAC, utilising the GENETICS Airbus Defence and Space platform, which includes:
- DALIA radar interface for visualisation and clearances
- TESLA Tactical Controller Tool (TCT) for conflict detection and resolution, developed by Airbus DS. TESLA enhances air traffic management with high-level automation and compliance monitoring, providing air traffic controllers with optimised, conflict-free trajectories by accurately predicting aircraft paths and assessing alternative clearances in real time.
- CORA Conflict Resolution Advisory, solution under test to rank TESLA proposals based on ATCOs preferred options.
Methodology
Experienced en-route radar ATCOs with over 10 years of expertise participated in the simulation in laboratory environment. Over three days, they managed traffic separation across various scenarios.
- Reference with only TESLA features
- Intermediate solution with CORA based on expert judgement
- Jarvis solution with CORA, AI-powered to reflect ATCOs preferences and behaviors
This session’s early outcomes bring new insights on CORA and automation usability, reliability, and ATCO trust mechanism towards AI-assisted conflict resolution.
Next Steps
A second validation session is planned in May 2025 with additional ATCOs to collect more feedback and consolidate findings. Stay tuned for the results by end of 2025!
