The ASTAIR project (Auto-Steer Taxi at AIRport) successfully held its Intermediate Review at the SESAR Joint Undertaking headquarters in Brussels this November.

Led by ENAC, ASTAIR focuses on developing tools for fully automated ground operations supervision. The project’s goal is to develop an advanced HMI prototype and support algorithms capable of autonomously managing ground vehicle movements. These solutions allow supervisors to fine-tune operations, ensuring adaptability to real-time events. The meeting provided an overview of the project’s objectives, updates on progress of the operations, and plans for next steps.

Building on the previous work done by the SESAR-funded AEON (also led by ENAC), ASTAIR tries to push ground automation to new levels by:

  • Developing human-centered AI for optimized path planning and resource management.
  • Creating interactive tools for AI-human collaboration in supervision and decision-making.
  • Establishing unified operations, seamlessly integrating human and automated processes.

Key Benefits

  • Efficiency: AI manages routine tasks, freeing controllers to address critical events.
  • Sustainability: Optimized taxiing reduces emissions by avoiding unnecessary stops and delays.
  • Capacity: Enhanced ground traffic predictability ensures smooth operations even in busy airports.

ENAC's contribution

As project lead, ENAC brings expertise in simulation platforms, HMI design, and automation integration, driving ASTAIR’s innovations forward.
